Ojé renaco

Geographical Distribution: The distribution of the species was obtained from literature and herbal reports within the provinces of Amazonas, Loreto, Huánuco, San Martín and Madre de Dios, between 0 and 500 m. above sea level. Average amounts of the species can be found in the Peruvian Amazon. The tree: More than 40 m. tall, 150 cm diameter approximately. Round trunk; 4 to 6-meter-high visible branches, extending 4 to 6 m. above the ground, 3 to 15 cm thick. Parasol-like, extremely branched top which, in certain forests, stands out from the highest level of foliage and expands some 20 m. around the main trunk. The surface of the bark ranks from brown to yellowish green, and it's covered with longitudinal rows of cracks. Thick main bark, from 4 to 6 cm. White latex oozes from the three inner layers of the main bark. Latex does not ooze from the fourth layer.

CHARACTERISTICS OF THE WOOD
Color: When freshly cut, sapwood (alburnum) is beige and regular, similar to (hardwood) duramen. Great contrast of color between them. When dried in open air, alburnum turns white HUE 8/2 2.5Y and duramen turns very pale brown HUE 8/4 10YR. (Munsell Soil Color Charts).

Fragrance Non-distinctive.
Shine or gloss Moderate to high.
Grain Interbred.
Texture Medium to thick.
Streaks or patterns: Well-defined, overlapped arches and wide parallel and glossy bands.

Ojé renaco is a medium type of wood, showing low linear shrinkage and fairly unstable volumetric shrinkage.
Mechanical resistance is in the medial rank.

TECHNICAL ADVICE

Low to medium mechanic resistance, wood is easy to saw and shows no tension. Its workability is considered good to average; however, tools become blunt very quickly and immediate processing is advisable.
Performs well when dried; if artificial drying system is used, a mild 10-day program for 2-inch thickness is recommended.
Low natural durability and prone to the attack of chromogene fungus; therefore immediate sawing of the pieces is re commendable.
Damp wood accepts preservation through immersion sys tem, dry wood does it through hot-cold bath system.

USES

Sawed wood is high-quality and it's used for lightweight structures, dovetail joints, indoor carpentry, molding, furniture, laminated wood, decorative plates, tabletops and plywood, with good results in terms of profits, productivity and quality.
lt's one of the densest species of Ficus.
